Rockintor AirVora: Armor Built to Actually Pedal In


Five posts this week and not one of them touches your ribcage. We covered Peaty’s Monarch saddle, Race Face’s Era SL crank, Whyte’s Sythe and Syphon, and Intend’s Elevator dropper — a saddle, a crank, two bikes, a dropper post. Nothing that actually does anything for you when one of those bikes puts you on the ground. Rockintor’s AirVora closes that gap, and the timing is convenient: the brand just took the full system live, including a new back-pad-less cut of the vest aimed at riders who already carry a pack with its own spine protection built in.

The pitch is simple and it’s the same pitch every chest protector makes: CE Level 2 armor across the torso, light enough and vented enough that you’ll actually keep it zipped up instead of stuffing it in your pack after the first climb. Most vests that claim this fail on the “actually keep it on” part. Whether AirVora is different comes down to three things — how much it weighs, how it vents, and whether the back-pad-less version solves a real problem or just removes protection to hit a lower number.

Why Chest Armor Ends Up in the Pack, Not on Your Back

Ask anyone who owns a chest protector when they actually wear it and the honest answer is usually “downhill days, bike park laps, maybe race day.” Not the three-hour pedal to get there. Not the climb back up for lap two. Armor that’s rated to take a hit is armor built from foam and plastic that doesn’t breathe, and a vest you sweat through on the way up is a vest you’ll leave zipped in your pack the next time out — which defeats the entire point of owning it.

That’s the problem Rockintor is building AirVora around, not a new foam compound or a bigger coverage map. The question isn’t whether the armor stops an impact. CE Level 2 foam does that by definition. The question is whether you’ll still have it on when the impact happens.

What’s Actually CE Level 2 Certified

CE Level 2 body armor means the pad has passed EN 1621 impact testing at the higher of the standard’s two pass thresholds, transmitting less force through to the body than Level 1 certified pads under the same test. AirVora carries that rating across more of the torso than most pedaling-specific vests bother with:

  • Chest — EN 1621-3:2018, Level 2, Type A
  • Back — EN 1621-2:2014, Level 2
  • Lower back — EN 1621-1:2012, Level 2, Type B
  • Ribs / sides — EN 1621-1:2012, Level 2, Type B

That’s chest, full back, lower back, and ribs all certified, not just claimed. A lot of “protection vests” on the market cover that same real estate with foam that never saw an EN 1621 test at all — it’s there for comfort and marketing copy, not for an actual impact rating. If you’re shopping on the strength of a spec sheet, that distinction is the one that matters, not weight or color.

The OrganProt3ct Belly Panel

Below the certified pads, AirVora runs what Rockintor calls the OrganProt3ct panel — a 3D mesh across the abdomen that isn’t CE rated (nothing back there is designed to absorb a blunt impact the way the chest and spine pads are) but is built to resist punctures and abrasion from handlebar ends, sharp rocks, and deadfall on the trail. It’s a coverage decision, not a certification one: most chest protectors stop at the ribs and leave the belly bare, which is exactly the zone a handlebar end finds in an over-the-bars crash. Whether that mesh actually holds up over a season of real riding isn’t something we can verify from a spec sheet, but the design logic — cover the gap other vests ignore — is sound.

How Does the AirVora’s Climb Mode Work?

  1. Unzip the front partway once you hit the climb.
  2. Peel back both side panels at the velcro tabs near the base of the zip.
  3. Secure each panel under the armpit on its matching velcro patch, flaring the vest open like a pair of wings.
  4. Ride the climb with direct airflow across the chest instead of sealed foam and fabric.
  5. Reverse the process before the descent — re-zip, re-seat the panels, and the certified coverage is back in place.

That’s the mechanism Pinkbike’s launch coverage and Singletrack World both describe, and it’s a reasonable answer to the actual complaint riders have about armor: not that it’s too heavy, but that it’s too hot to leave on between the climb and the descent. Velcro tabs are a low-tech solution, but low-tech is what survives being caked in trail dust and opened one-handed while you’re still turning pedals.

The New Back-Pad-Less Variant

This is the actual news in the launch, not the vest itself. The standard AirVora carries a full back pad — chest to lower spine, all certified. The new Back-Pad-Less variant strips out just the upper back pad and keeps the lower-back protection in place, built for riders who already wear a hydration pack with its own integrated spine protector.

That’s a real problem for anyone who’s tried to layer both. We’ve recommended the Evoc Trail Pro 16 on this site specifically for its integrated back protector, and stacking a second full back pad underneath a pack like that means two layers of foam competing for the same real estate on your spine — bulkier, hotter, and not meaningfully safer than either one worn alone. Rockintor’s fix is to let you drop the redundant pad rather than sell you a vest that assumes you’re not already carrying one.

The catch: if you don’t already run a back-protector pack, the standard vest is the one to buy. Losing the upper back pad without something else covering that zone is a straightforward reduction in protection, not a free upgrade.

Weight, the Base Layer, and Whether You Need Both

The vest alone runs 900-940g in a size M/L, depending on size and configuration. That’s light for the certification level it’s carrying — full chest, back, lower-back, and rib coverage in under a kilogram is a genuinely different number than what most Level 2 vests weigh in at.

The base layer is sold separately at 235g and adds CE Level 2 shoulder protection, which the vest itself doesn’t cover. Shoulders are a common crash-impact zone that a lot of chest protectors skip entirely, so the base layer isn’t just a moisture-wicking add-on — it’s closing a coverage gap the vest leaves open on its own. If shoulder protection matters to your riding (bike park laps, anything with real consequence for a highside), budget for both pieces rather than the vest alone.

Price and the Black-Mora Colorway

AirVora is priced at $245 USD / £230 / €215 for the vest. That’s not cheap for a chest protector — it’s well above what a basic foam vest costs, though it’s in line with what other CE Level 2, multi-zone protection systems run. The vest ships in Black-Mora, the finalized production colorway after Rockintor’s earlier limited-run releases.

Compare that to a standalone protection strategy: a set of knee pads with genuine Level 2 foam runs $100-150 on their own, per our own testing on this site. AirVora is asking roughly that much again just for torso coverage — a fair price if you actually need chest, back, and rib protection, and a number worth skipping if your riding doesn’t call for it.

Who Should Buy This

Riders who own a chest protector and don’t wear it. If the reason it stays in your pack is heat, not weight, Climb Mode is built to solve exactly that.

Anyone already running a pack with integrated back protection. The Back-Pad-Less variant is the more useful of the two options here — buy that one, not the standard vest, and skip the redundant pad.

Riders who’ve been buying separate rib and lower-back protection. AirVora certifies more torso zones in one piece than most riders currently carry across two or three separate products.

Who Should Skip It

Riders on a tight protection budget. $245 for a vest is real money, and a set of certified knee and elbow pads covers the impact zones most trail riders actually crash on first.

Anyone who doesn’t already own a back-protector pack and is eyeing the Back-Pad-Less version to save weight. That variant assumes you’re covering the upper back another way. Skip it if you’re not.

Riders who need a multi-season durability track record before buying. This is a fresh launch. The Climb Mode velcro and the OrganProt3ct mesh are the parts most likely to show wear first, and nobody outside Rockintor’s own testing has logged real trail seasons on the finished product yet.

The Bottom Line

Most chest protectors solve the certification problem and ignore the “will you actually wear it” problem. AirVora goes after both — CE Level 2 across chest, back, lower back, and ribs, at 900-940g, with a venting system built specifically for the climb-then-descend rhythm that makes most armor feel pointless on anything but shuttle days. The Back-Pad-Less variant is the smarter of the two options for anyone already running a protector pack, and it’s the part of this launch worth paying attention to even if the standard vest isn’t new news. At $245, it’s not an impulse buy. For riders who’ve been skipping torso protection because the last vest they owned lived in the bottom of a pack, it’s a legitimate reason to reconsider.
