Intend builds forks. That’s it, that’s been the whole catalog for years — inverted, boutique, the kind of German suspension you buy because you want something nobody else on the trailhead is running. So when a small Freiburg shop with zero dropper post history ships one days after teasing it, the reasonable reaction is suspicion. Then you read the spec sheet, and the suspicion changes shape.

The Elevator is Intend’s first-ever dropper post, and it borrows more from Intend’s fork background than from anything else on the dropper market right now. The headline feature — SafeSpace Technology — is a sealed air chamber at the base of the post that builds progressive resistance as it bottoms out, the same trick a fork’s lower legs use to keep you from clanking through the last few millimeters of travel. A Fork Company’s First Dropper Post

We’ve covered Intend once already on this site, and it wasn’t for a dropper. The Intend Samurai XC 32 — the first 32-inch suspension fork to reach series production — showed up inverted and wired to RockShox Flight Attendant on Ventum’s Leadville prototype earlier this month. That bike finished 14th, not first, but the fork itself did its job across five and a half hours of racing. Intend’s whole reputation is built on forks that do unconventional things well: inverted layouts, real bottom-out control, service you can actually do yourself.

The Elevator reads like Intend looked at the dropper post category and asked why none of that engineering had crossed over. Most droppers are a cartridge in a tube, sealed with grease that eventually migrates, wears, or freezes depending on where you ride. Intend’s answer is to treat the bottom of a dropper post like the bottom of a fork’s lower legs — as an air spring problem, not just a hydraulic-cartridge problem.

What Is SafeSpace Technology?

SafeSpace Technology is a sealed air chamber at the base of the Elevator’s post body that compresses as the post nears full insertion, creating progressive resistance instead of a hard mechanical stop. It works the same way a suspension fork’s air spring ramps up through the last part of its travel — smooth through most of the stroke, firmer right before bottom-out. Intend sets the chamber pressure to rider weight before the post ships.

That’s a genuinely different approach than what’s on the market. Cable-actuated posts from OneUp or PNW rely on a hydraulic or mechanical cartridge to control the whole stroke, with no separate air-spring layer doing anything at the bottom specifically. BikeYoke’s Revive 2 solves a different problem — a self-bleeding bladder that keeps the hydraulic circuit free of trapped air over years of use — but it’s not adding progression at bottom-out the way SafeSpace claims to. Intend is the first post we’ve seen borrow the fork playbook directly rather than just making the existing dropper formula more reliable.

Bronze/PTFE Bushings and Oil Instead of Grease

The other half of the pitch is about what happens to side-to-side play over time. Most droppers use plastic bushings between the inner and outer tubes — cheap, fine when new, and the first thing to develop slop as the post racks up hours. Intend went with dual piston-rod bearings and bronze/PTFE bushings instead, the same material pairing you’d find in higher-end fork lowers, specifically to keep lateral play from creeping in as the post wears.

Lubrication follows the same logic. Oil, not grease, and the post is described as self-bleeding — ride it enough and the cartridge works air out of the system on its own rather than needing a manual bleed. That’s not a new idea; BikeYoke’s REVIVE system on the Revive 2 does something similar with a self-compensating bladder, and it’s the reason that post still feels new three seasons in. Intend is making a comparable durability claim on a post that’s existed for a matter of days. The engineering logic checks out on paper. Whether it holds up after two winters of Pacific Northwest mud is a separate question nobody — including us — has an answer to yet.

The Numbers: Price, Weight, Travel

Here’s where the Elevator sits against what a rider’s actually choosing between:

  1. Price: €379 for the post (roughly $440 USD with 19% VAT baked in), plus €79 if you want Intend’s own Elevator Boy remote lever rather than running a third-party one. Call it close to $520 all-in at current exchange rates — squarely in Fox Transfer SL and RockShox Reverb AXS territory, not budget territory.
  2. Weight: 564g without the lever. One source lists 612g for the 190mm version with the Elevator Boy attached, which puts it closer to the OneUp V3’s 410g (150mm) than to the Fox Transfer SL’s featherweight 295g. This isn’t a weight-weenie part. It’s a durability-first part that happens to come from a fork company.
  3. Travel: 150, 160, 170, 180, and 190mm — five options, all at the long end of what riders actually run. There’s no short-travel option here for smaller frames or XC builds. If you need anything under 150mm, look elsewhere.
  4. Diameter: 31.6mm only. No 30.9mm option at launch, which rules out a chunk of older and smaller frames outright. If your seat tube isn’t 31.6mm, this conversation is over before it starts.

Who Should Consider the Elevator

Riders who already run Intend’s forks and trust the brand’s approach to service. If you’re on a Samurai and you like how Intend thinks about maintenance, the Elevator is a logical cockpit match with the same philosophy — oil over grease, home-serviceable, built to be rebuilt rather than replaced.

Riders who’ve been burned by side-to-side play on a well-worn dropper. The bronze/PTFE bushing swap is aimed directly at the failure mode that shows up on cheaper posts after a season or two — a wobble at the saddle that no amount of clamp-bolt torque fixes. If that’s happened to you, Intend’s pitch will make immediate sense.

Riders who want the fork-style bottom-out feel and are willing to pay Fox Transfer SL money for a brand-new part with zero track record. That’s the honest trade here. You’re an early adopter on a first-generation product from a small shop, paying premium pricing for engineering that’s promising on paper.

Who Should Wait

Anyone who needs 30.9mm. There’s no version. Full stop, no workaround.

Riders who want proven long-term reliability data before spending $440-plus on a seatpost. The BikeYoke Revive 2 has three seasons of riders reporting it still feels like day one. The Elevator has days. Both companies make similar self-bleeding claims — only one of them has years of trail reports backing it up.

Anyone chasing wireless. The Elevator is fully mechanical, cable-actuated with the Elevator Boy remote. If you want to eliminate housing entirely, the Reverb AXS 2026 is the post to look at, at a similar price point but a completely different mechanism and a much longer service history behind it.

Riders on a budget. At $440-plus before you’ve added a remote, this isn’t competing with the PNW Coast or OneUp V3 crowd. It’s competing with flagship posts, on flagship pricing, from a brand that’s shipped exactly one of these.

What We’re Watching For

Whether the self-bleeding claim holds up in cold, wet conditions. BikeYoke earned its reputation on the Revive 2 over multiple seasons of Pacific Northwest winters. Intend’s making a similar claim on day one. Time, not marketing copy, settles that argument.

Whether a 30.9mm version shows up. Launching 31.6mm-only from a brand with no prior dropper post experience is a reasonable way to keep a first product simple. It also locks out a meaningful chunk of the market until that changes.

Long-term wear on the bronze/PTFE bushings under real mud and grit. The material swap addresses a real problem. Whether it actually outlasts plastic bushings in practice, rather than just in engineering theory, is exactly the kind of claim that needs riding hours to confirm.

The Bottom Line

Intend didn’t build a me-too dropper. SafeSpace Technology’s air-chamber bottom-out damping, bronze/PTFE bushings over plastic, and an oil-based self-bleeding system that mirrors what’s made the BikeYoke Revive 2 a three-season favorite — that’s a genuine engineering pitch, not a marketing rewrite of an existing cartridge. At €379 for the post and €79 for the Elevator Boy remote, it’s priced like it means that pitch seriously.

What it doesn’t have yet is time. No trail reports, no winter of mud, no confirmation that the bushing swap actually outlasts the plastic it replaces. If you already trust Intend’s fork engineering and you’re willing to be an early adopter on a first-generation part, this is worth a look. Everyone else: the BikeYoke Revive 2 is still the safer bet at a lower price, with three seasons of riders vouching for it instead of a launch-week spec sheet.
