Bafang doesn’t usually pick fights with the two motor brands everyone else is watching. On August 26, it did anyway. The company announced the M510RS and M560RS, a pair of racing-focused eMTB drive units, and buried the lede in the second spec line: the M560RS claims 150Nm of peak torque and 1,700W of output at 48V. On paper, that’s more watts than DJI’s flagship Avinox motor and more torque and power than anything Bosch currently sells for a mountain bike. Two claims, one press release, and a launch timed for a bike show in Italy next week.
We’ve spent the last several months tracking this exact fight — DJI Avinox against Bosch CX, then the lightweight motors trying to opt out of it entirely. Bafang just walked in from the side with the biggest numbers anyone’s posted yet. Whether that matters on an actual trail is a different question, and right now nobody outside Bafang’s test program can answer it.

Two motors, both pitched at eMTB racing rather than general trail riding. The M510RS is the lighter-duty option: 110Nm of peak torque in normal operation, climbing to 120-130Nm when Bafang’s Boost-to-Limit function kicks in, and 1,100W at 36V or 1,300W at 48V. The M560RS is the one making headlines — 120Nm base peak torque, boosted to 150Nm, and 1,400W at 36V or 1,700W at 48V. Both motors weigh a claimed 3.3kg, which is worth remembering before you get too excited about those power numbers. More on that below.
Both systems share a six-axis IMU and what Bicycle Retailer reported as “fully optimized control algorithms,” built from over 4,000 hours of race and trail tuning that reportedly included runs through the WES UCI E-MTB World Cup. Bafang says the result is 50% faster response and 33% more sensitive power cutoff than the standard M510 and M560 — the non-racing versions already sold through Bafang’s OEM partners. Sport+ mode delivers adaptive assistance up to 500%; Boost-to-Limit is the short-burst mode that hits the full 800% figure everyone’s quoting, per Electrek’s reporting. Read that correctly: 800% is a burst number for a crux move, not what the motor is doing for the whole climb.
Both RS motors also keep the same mounting interface as the standard M510 and M560, which matters more than it sounds. It means any frame already engineered around those motors could, in theory, accept the RS versions without a redesign — a real advantage if Bafang wants OEM partners to adopt this fast.

That’s the whole pitch in one list: Bafang is claiming the highest watt figure in the category and tying the highest torque figure. Whether the RS motors get to actually prove any of that on a production bike is still an open question.
Here’s the catch. DJI’s Avinox M2S, the motor putting up the closest numbers, weighs a claimed 2.59kg. The M560RS weighs 3.3kg — about 700 grams heavier, which on a bike is not a rounding error. That’s roughly a water bottle’s worth of extra mass sitting low in the frame, and it’s the kind of trade-off that tends to get left out of the headline spec comparison.
More power for more weight isn’t a scandal. It’s an engineering choice, and depending on how the frame around it is built, it might not matter much once you’re pedaling. But it does mean the straight “Bafang beats Avinox” framing going around this week is only true if you only look at torque and watts. Add weight to the comparison and DJI’s motor is still doing more with less mass. We’d want that number confirmed independently — claimed weights from a manufacturer’s own press release have a way of creeping up once a motor actually ships.
Bafang first showed the RS platform as a concept at Eurobike 2025, which means this has been in development for the better part of a year before reaching production form. Production units debut at the Italian Bike Festival in Misano, Italy, September 4-6, with test rides available to attendees. Mass production is targeted for Q4 2026 — meaning if everything stays on schedule, the first RS-equipped bikes could realistically reach dealers in early 2027, not this fall.
Coverage moved fast and wide for a motor announcement: Pinkbike, Electrek, Bicycle Retailer, and BikeBiz all ran coverage within about 48 hours of each other, along with several MTB-specific and Italian outlets. That’s the same pattern we saw with Yeti’s MT launch last week — simultaneous coverage across a wide outlet list, which usually means a manufacturer confident enough to hand out the same press kit to everyone at once rather than staggering exclusives.
No bike has been announced running either RS motor. No pricing has been announced — not for the motors themselves, and obviously not for a complete build, since none exist yet. Every number in this post is Bafang’s own claim, pulled from a press release and repeated across outlets that, as far as we can tell, haven’t put an independent dyno on either motor yet. That’s normal for a pre-launch announcement, but it’s worth being honest about: “150Nm claimed” and “150Nm measured” are different sentences, and right now we only have the first one.
The IMU and control-algorithm claims are the part we’re actually most curious about. Raw torque and wattage numbers are easy to print on a spec sheet. Whether the six-axis IMU translates into power delivery that doesn’t feel like a switch flipping on a technical climb — the way TQ’s harmonic drive changed how that motor behaves on trail — won’t be knowable until someone puts real miles on a production bike.
Riders who race eMTB enduro or the WES circuit. Bafang built this specifically for that field, and if the claimed numbers hold up under independent testing, it’s a legitimate new option at the top of the power range.
Anyone tracking the motor arms race as a category. Three manufacturers — DJI, Bosch, and now Bafang — have all pushed peak numbers up within the last five months. That trajectory is the story, independent of which motor wins this specific round.
Everyone shopping for a bike this year. There’s nothing to buy. No frame, no complete build, no price. The earliest realistic purchase window is 2027, and that assumes Q4 2026 mass production stays on schedule.
Riders who don’t need 150Nm. We said this about the DJI Avinox M1 and it still applies here, more so: 90% of riders don’t need triple-digit torque and won’t notice the difference between 85Nm and 150Nm outside of the steepest, loosest pitches on a course built for racing.
Bafang picked a real fight this week, not a marketing one. The M560RS’s 1,700W claim beats DJI’s Avinox M2S by 200 watts, and its 150Nm torque claim ties it — numbers that would have sounded absurd on an eMTB motor a year ago. But the motor is also 700 grams heavier than the Avinox it’s compared against, nobody outside Bafang has verified either figure independently, and there isn’t a single bike you can order with either RS motor in it. The Italian Bike Festival on September 4-6 is the first real chance for anyone outside Bafang’s own test riders to find out if the numbers survive contact with a trail. Until then, this is a spec sheet with a release date, not a motor you can evaluate.
