The Trail Tool Kit: What You Actually Need (And What's Just Weight)


The first time I flatted 8 miles from the trailhead with no repair kit, I walked. Took two hours. Swore I’d be prepared.

Then I overcorrected. Carried a mini bike shop for a year. Tire plugs, patch kit, spare tube, CO2, mini pump, chain tool, quick link, multi-tool, spare derailleur hanger, zip ties, electrical tape, brake pads… my pack weighed more than some people’s bikes.

After five years and more trailside repairs than I want to count, I’ve found the balance. Enough to fix what actually breaks. Nothing more.

The Core Kit: What Never Leaves My Pack

Tire Plugs (Dynaplug, Stan’s DART, or Genuine Innovations)

Tire plugs saved tubeless. Before plugs, sidewall nicks meant either ride on a flat or spend 15 minutes installing a tube covered in sealant.

Now: stop, find the hole, insert plug, continue. Takes 30 seconds.

What I carry: Dynaplug Racer kit (two brass-tipped plugs) plus two spare plugs loose in my pack. The brass tip inserts easier than plastic-tipped options.

Reality check: Plugs don’t fix everything. Big sidewall slashes, bead tears, or punctures that rip wide—those still need a tube or a creative boot. But 90% of punctures? Plugged and rolling.

Weight: 15g for the kit, 3g per spare plug

Mini Pump (Not Just CO2)

CO2 is faster. Mini pumps are more reliable.

CO2 cartridges give you one shot. Miss the valve, accidentally trigger it, or face a second flat—you’re walking. Cold weather drops CO2 pressure. And you need to carry cartridges, which aren’t reusable.

Mini pumps are slower but unlimited. You can top off tires, adjust pressure for conditions, and fix multiple flats.

What I carry: Lezyne Pocket Drive HP. Gets to 60 PSI (enough for tubeless MTB), fits in a jersey pocket, weighs 90g.

Alternatives: Topeak Road Morph (heavier but easier to use), OneUp EDC Pump (integrated into steerer tube—clever but specialized).

CO2 as backup: Some riders carry both. I don’t—the pump has never failed me. But a single CO2 as emergency backup isn’t crazy.

Multi-Tool with Chain Tool

Everything on your bike will eventually loosen. Bolts work themselves out. Brake levers shift. Dropper remotes rotate. A multi-tool handles all of it.

Minimum features:

  • 4, 5, 6mm hex
  • T25 Torx (increasingly common on modern bikes)
  • Chain tool (essential—see below)
  • Phillips screwdriver (occasional use)

What I carry: Crank Brothers M19. Has everything including a chain tool and spoke wrenches. Overkill but covers every scenario.

Budget option: Park Tool IB-2 or Topeak Mini 20 Pro. Fewer features, lower weight, adequate for most repairs.

Weight: 100-180g depending on model

Chains break. Even new chains. Even expensive chains. A broken chain 10 miles out ends your ride unless you can fix it.

Quick links (also called master links or missing links) let you reconnect a chain without special tools. Remove the broken links with your chain tool, install the quick link, ride home.

What to carry: Two quick links matching your chain. 10-speed links don’t fit 12-speed chains. Match what’s on your bike.

Where to carry: I tape one to my multi-tool and keep one loose in my pack. Redundancy for a 5-gram part.

Cost: $5-8 for a pair. No excuse not to have them.

The Conditional Kit: Based on Your Bike and Terrain

Spare Derailleur Hanger

Derailleur hangers are designed to break. Better the replaceable hanger than your frame or derailleur.

Carry one if:

  • Your hanger is known to be fragile (check forums)
  • You ride technical terrain where strikes happen
  • You’re far from trailheads regularly
  • Your bike has a proprietary hanger (not SRAM UDH)

Skip it if:

  • You run SRAM UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger)—more common and often available
  • You rarely ride alone
  • Your trails are relatively smooth

The catch: Hangers are bike-specific. Order your exact part number. A “close enough” hanger doesn’t fit.

Weight: 15-25g

Spare Tube

Counterintuitive for tubeless riders, but a tube can salvage a destroyed tire.

When you need it:

  • Sidewall slash too big to plug or boot
  • Bead torn from rim
  • Sealant dried out and tire won’t seal
  • Tube for a friend running tubes

What to carry: One tube matching your tire size. Doesn’t need to be the best—it’s a get-home solution. Lightweight tubes save a few grams.

Where to carry: Rolled tight with a rubber band. Takes space but can save a ride.

My approach: I carry a tube for remote rides (10+ miles from car) and skip it for local laps where walking out isn’t a crisis.

Weight: 180-220g for a 29er tube

Patch Kit

Patch kits are backup to the backup. If you’ve already used your plugs and your tube, patches might save you.

Reality: I’ve carried a patch kit for five years and used it once. A tube is usually sufficient, and if your tube has multiple holes, something else went wrong.

What I carry: Park Tool VP-1 (6 patches, glue, sandpaper). Weighs 15g. Worth carrying just in case.

Brake Pads

Long descents eat brake pads. If yours are worn and you’re heading somewhere remote with big elevation, fresh pads in your pack are insurance.

When to carry:

  • Multi-day trips
  • Rides with 5,000+ feet of descent
  • If you notice pads getting thin before the ride

What to get: Match your brake model exactly. Resin for most conditions, metallic if you’re descending in wet weather.

Weight: 20-30g per pair

The Weight Trap: What to Leave Home

Spare Brake Rotors

Never seen a rotor fail mid-ride that was fixable trailside. Bent rotors can be straightened enough to ride. If a rotor breaks, you’re not fixing it on the trail anyway.

Full Chain Tool Kits

Your multi-tool’s chain breaker works. You don’t need a dedicated chain tool for trail repairs.

Spoke Wrenches (Usually)

If you’re riding wheels with enough spokes and reasonable tension, trailside spoke work is rare. By the time you need a spoke wrench, you usually need a new wheel.

Exception: If you’ve broken spokes before on your current wheelset, carry the wrench.

Assorted Bolts and Hardware

I used to carry spare bolts, seat clamp bolts, pivot bolts. Never used any. If a bolt falls out and you don’t have a spare, zip-tie something temporarily. Way lighter than carrying hardware for every possible failure.

First Aid Kits (But Actually…)

This guide is about bike tools, but: carry basic first aid. A few bandages, antibiotic ointment, and medical tape weigh nothing and matter when you crash.

How to Organize Your Kit

Under-Saddle Bag

Classic for a reason. Keeps tools off your body, easy access, doesn’t move.

Good options:

  • Dakine Hot Laps Gripper (stays put on aggressive riding)
  • Lezyne Caddy (weatherproof, expandable)
  • Blackburn Grid (compact, secure)

Fit consideration: Make sure your dropper clears the bag. Low dropper + big bag = interference.

Frame Bag / Top Tube Bag

Better for high-movement riding where saddle bags swing. Also spreads weight lower.

What fits: Multi-tool, plugs, CO2. Too small for tubes or full kits.

Good for: XC and light trail where you want minimal disruption.

Hip Pack / Hydration Pack

The option that carries everything—and adds weight to your body. Best for long rides where you’re carrying water and food anyway.

My preference: Dakine Hot Laps 2L for anything over 2 hours. Tools in one pocket, food in another, water in the bladder. Everything in one place.

Integrated Storage

Some bikes have frame storage, steerer tube storage, or built-in options. Check what your frame offers. The OneUp EDC system is clever—tools inside your steerer tube, accessed by removing the stem cap.

My Actual Kit (5 Years Refined)

In my hip pack:

  • Crank Brothers M19 multi-tool
  • Dynaplug Racer + 2 spare plugs
  • Lezyne Pocket Drive mini pump
  • 2 quick links (taped to multi-tool)
  • Spare derailleur hanger
  • Small zip ties (4x)
  • Electrical tape wrapped around pump

For remote rides, add:

  • Spare tube
  • Patch kit

Total weight: ~350g for standard kit, ~570g with tube/patches

Total cost: ~$120 (one-time investment)

The Bottom Line

Carry enough to fix what actually fails: punctures, chain breaks, loose bolts. Skip the mini bike shop—that weight is better spent on snacks.

The best repair kit is one you actually carry. If yours is too heavy or complicated, you’ll leave it home. Keep it simple, keep it light, and you’ll have it when you need it.


Five years of carrying tools, 15+ trailside repairs. The plugs paid for themselves on the first use. The spare hanger has saved three rides. The spoke wrench? Never touched it.
