The chainring isn’t where you think it is anymore. On the S-Works Demo 11, Specialized moved it 30mm up and forward off the bottom bracket, ran it into a jackshaft, and called the result HighGear. That’s the headline. It’s also, depending who you ask, either the most significant DH drivetrain rethink since idler pulleys became standard or a solution looking for a problem.
I lean toward the first read, and I’ll explain why. But first: this is the biggest redesign of Specialized’s downhill platform in roughly a decade, it launched this spring, and this site hasn’t covered it yet. That gap ends now, with UCI Downhill World Championships at Val di Sole running August 25-30 and DH finals on Saturday the 29th — Loïc Bruni, Finn Iles, and Jordan Williams will be racing this exact bike on the sport’s biggest stage right as most of you are shopping for fall DH days.

Here’s the part everyone’s arguing about, so let’s define it cleanly first.
HighGear is a jackshaft drivetrain: a small chainring on the crank spindle drives an internal shaft, and a separate drive ring on that shaft feeds the chain back to the cassette. Moving the effective chainring 30mm up and forward keeps the chain length between the jackshaft and the rear axle constant through the full travel, which is the whole point — chain growth is what causes pedal kickback on a conventional single-pivot or idler bike, and HighGear is built to remove it almost entirely.
Specialized’s own line on it, echoed across the launch coverage: the drive ring’s position “keeps the chainstay length constant throughout the travel, keeping chain forces well away from the suspension’s movement.” That’s a real engineering claim, not marketing fluff, and it’s the same problem RMU’s Nighttrain is chasing with its dual-idler, dual-chain Orion suspension. Different mechanism, same target: decouple what your legs are doing from what your rear wheel is doing.
The trade-off nobody’s glossing over: this is more mechanical complexity than a standard drivetrain. A jackshaft means more bearings, more sealed interfaces, more places for a rock strike to do expensive damage. Specialized is betting three years of World Cup development derisks that. We won’t know if they’re right until Demo 11s have a full race season of mud and rock strikes on them.
The second half of the redesign is just as unconventional. OBB (Over Bottom Bracket) suspension drives the shock through a link connected to the chainstays, between the main pivot and the rear axle — pulling the shock into compression rather than pushing it, the way most linkage-driven DH bikes work. Specialized says this setup lets engineers tune axle path, leverage rate, and braking behavior independently instead of accepting the compromises a shared linkage usually forces.
In practice: a 24% progressive leverage curve, a rearward axle path early in the stroke that moves forward again later, and what Specialized calls a “self-aligning chassis” — the idea being that pulling the shock through tension rather than compression keeps things tracking straight under load instead of twisting.
Loïc Bruni, whose feedback shaped three years of this bike’s development, put it more bluntly than any spec sheet could: “Sacre bleu! I’ve never felt anything like it. The bigger the impacts, the more stable and calm the bike is,” he told Brink. That’s a World Cup-winning racer’s word, not an independent long-term test, but it’s not nothing either.

Head angle sits at 62.5° in the high setting, with reach adjustable ±6mm through replaceable headset cups (445mm, 475mm, or 500mm across S3-S5) and bottom bracket height adjustable ±7mm via flip chip. Chainstays scale by size, 435mm to 455mm. None of that is radical for the category on its own — it’s the drivetrain and suspension doing the talking here, not the geometry chart.
Claimed weight is 19.03kg (41.94lb) for an S4. That’s a race-spec number on a bike that isn’t chasing weight-weenie bragging rights; DH bikes this travel-heavy rarely dip much lower, and a 30mm-taller drivetrain assembly isn’t a weight-saving move by design.
Specialized isn’t offering a tiered build ladder here the way most brands do with a DH platform. There’s one complete build and a frameset option, full stop.
There’s no mid-tier alloy build, no cheaper drivetrain option. That’s a deliberate choice, and it prices out a huge chunk of the DH-curious market. Compare that to RMU’s Nighttrain, which spans $4,999 to $6,999 across three complete builds with a genuinely novel dual-chain suspension of its own. The Demo 11 isn’t trying to compete on accessibility. It’s trying to win World Cups and sell the halo product to riders who were always going to spend five figures on a DH bike anyway.

The honest read: HighGear is solving a real problem more thoroughly than idler pulleys do. Whether the added mechanical complexity is worth it for anyone who isn’t racing World Cup DH is the open question, and it’s not one three months of launch coverage can answer. The SRAM XX DH AXS drivetrain that feeds into HighGear on the S-Works build has already proven itself reliable under load in our testing — that part of the equation isn’t the risk here. The jackshaft is.
The Demo 11’s closest philosophical rival right now isn’t another Specialized. It’s RMU’s Nighttrain, and the two bikes make an interesting pair specifically because they attack the same pedal-kickback problem from opposite directions — one adds a second chain and idler set, the other relocates the whole chainring off the bottom bracket entirely. On the component side, the S-Works build’s SRAM Maven Ultimate brakes and RockShox Vivid Coil shock put it in the same ecosystem conversation as SRAM’s broader 2027 DH lineup, which we’ve already covered piece by piece. The Demo 11 is effectively that ecosystem plus a frame built specifically around it, and co-developed with SRAM rather than just speccing their parts off a catalog.

Sag targets don’t change because the shock is being pulled instead of pushed, but understanding why matters when you’re troubleshooting.
Jackshaft durability under repeated rock strikes. More bearings and a taller drivetrain profile is more surface area for something to go wrong. Three years of World Cup testing is real evidence, but a World Cup mechanic’s truck of spares isn’t the same support a customer gets from a local shop.
Whether HighGear parts availability holds up. This is new hardware, co-developed with SRAM specifically for one bike. If a jackshaft bearing fails 18 months from now, replacement lead times matter.
Val di Sole results. Bruni, Iles, and Williams racing this bike at Worlds is the single best data point available before any of us get real trail time on one. A podium (or a mechanical DNF) will say more than any spec sheet.
Whether Specialized brings a lower-price build. Right now it’s $11,000 or $6,500-for-a-frame-you-still-have-to-build-up. That’s a narrow window. A future alloy or lower-tier carbon option would open this platform to a lot more riders.
DH racers who want the newest suspension and drivetrain thinking available, full stop. If you’re racing at a level where pedal kickback costs you time on rough, pedally sections of track, HighGear is solving a problem you actually have.
Riders who already run SRAM’s DH ecosystem and want a frame built around it rather than adapted to it. The Maven brakes, Vivid Coil shock, and XX DH AXS drivetrain are proven quantities on their own; buying them factory-integrated into a purpose-built chassis is a real value if you were speccing those parts anyway.
Sponsored or well-funded riders who can absorb first-generation risk. $11,000 is a number that makes “wait and see” the financially responsible choice for most people. If a mechanical failure eighteen months in isn’t a budget-wrecking event for you, the calculus changes.
Anyone who needs a mid-price DH build. There isn’t one. It’s the full $11,000 build or a $6,500 frame you’re on the hook to spec yourself. Riders who want a complete bike in the $5,000-7,000 range should look at the RMU Nighttrain’s Saint DH build or a previous-generation Demo instead.
Riders who prioritize simple, well-understood maintenance over the newest idea. A jackshaft is one more thing to learn, service, and eventually replace parts for. If your local shop has never seen one, you’re the early adopter absorbing that learning curve.
Weekend park riders who don’t pedal enough on their runs to notice kickback. HighGear’s whole case is built on eliminating pedal feedback during compression. If most of your riding is point-and-shoot with minimal pedaling, you’re paying a premium to solve a problem you don’t have as often.
Specialized didn’t tweak the Demo. They rebuilt the drivetrain and the suspension linkage from first principles, in the open, over three years, with a World Cup team feeding back real data the whole way. HighGear’s jackshaft and OBB’s pull-through-tension shock mount are both genuinely new ideas executed with the kind of budget only a brand Specialized’s size can throw at a low-volume race bike.
Whether that adds up to a better bike than a well-sorted idler-pulley DH platform is still an open question with a real price tag attached to finding out. Bruni’s early word is glowing. World Cup results and, more importantly, Val di Sole this month will tell us more than any press release. For now: watch the racing, watch the jackshaft durability reports once customer bikes rack up hours, and don’t assume “co-developed with SRAM” alone justifies an $11,000 sticker price for your riding.
